About Chief Toby Aguillard

On November 3, 2016, Lafayette Mayor-President Joel Robideaux named Toby Aguillard as Chief of Police of the Lafayette Police Department (LPD). A veteran law enforcement officer and former prosecutor, Chief Aguillard has a combined 28 years in law enforcement and criminal justice experience.
Mayor-President Robideaux said “I am pleased to introduce Toby Aguillard as the Chief of Police. Toby brings a strong and diverse set of law enforcement and legal expertise to the position, as well as his impressive educational credentials.” Chief Aguillard holds a bachelor’s degree from St. Joseph Seminary College and a law degree from Southern University Law Center-Baton Rouge. In addition to 18 years of law enforcement experience, Chief Aguillard has a decade of combined experience as an Assistant District Attorney in Cameron Parish and Assistant Attorney General and Special Agent at the Louisiana Department of Justice. “Lafayette’s Police Department will benefit from Toby’s leadership and his depth and breadth of experience across the criminal justice system.”
Since 2007, Chief Aguillard has worked for the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office (TPSO), where he has served as the director of the Internet Crimes Against Children Division for the last nine years. Prior to his tenure with TPSO, Chief Aguillard worked in both the Cameron and East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Offices.
Chief Aguillard is committed to community policing as the cornerstone to a successful relationship between law enforcement and neighborhoods to “create solutions to crime, eliminate fear and enhance the quality of life for all.” Chief Aguillard also committed to build relationships with his counterparts and their departments in municipalities throughout Lafayette Parish.
Chief Aguillard assumed the position of Chief previously filled by Interim Chief of Police Reginald Thomas. On Nov. 1, Thomas was provisionally appointed to Deputy Chief. The LPD Police Chief position was vacated on Jan. 31 when longtime Police Chief Jim Craft was appointed by Governor John Bel Edwards to serve as executive director of the Louisiana Commission on Law Enforcement.
